City Council Vote on Resolutions for Declaring a Climate Emergency and HR763

We are excited to share that on Tuesday, June 23, the City Council will vote on a resolution establishing a Climate Emergency and a resolution urging Congress to pass HR 763, The Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act (an update to a 2017 resolution (2017-31) supporting national carbon fee and dividend legislation).

To watch the online streaming of the Council meeting, go to https://www.flagstaff.az.gov/1461/Streaming-City-Council-Meetings and select the “Live Conference Room” tab. The meeting begins at 3pm, and we expect these agenda items will begin sometime after 3:45pm.

Residents in Flagstaff are coordinating an effort for supporters to sign a group letter to show Council that there is public support for these resolutions. Wording of each support letter is below along with both resolutions as presented to the Council. To sign on to a group letter, click here and you’ll be directed to a Google Form. There, you’ll have a choice to add your name to one or both letters. NOTE: all comments must be delivered by noon, June 22, so the deadline to get your name attached to these letters is noon, June 21.

Open Letter to the Flagstaff City Council in Support of:

A RESOLUTION DECLARING A CLIMATE EMERGENCY

We, the undersigned, support the declaration of a climate emergency and the elevation of the goals of the Climate Action and Adaptation Plan to carbon neutrality by 2030. In light of the declaration of a climate emergency, we also call for the consideration of climate, resiliency, and equity in all decisions that impact the City of Flagstaff.

Open Letter to the Flagstaff City Council in Support of:

A RESOLUTION OF THE FLAGSTAFF CITY COUNCIL URGING THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS TO PASS HR 763 THE ENERGY INNOVATION AND CARBON DIVIDEND ACT

We, the undersigned, believe that climate change requires urgent, effective action at local, regional, and national levels; we agree with climate scientists and economists that carbon pricing is an effective driver of emissions reductions; and we urge you to pass this resolution urging Congress to pass HR 763—a bipartisan, effective, and fair approach to national carbon pricing that will protect our most vulnerable populations as it reduces emissions at a national scale.
