Millicent Olal-Muchilwa will present here on zoom. Millicent is a B.A. Hons (Economics) graduate of the University of Nairobi and a certified community organizer, dedicated to working with local communities over the years turning climate challenges into opportunities. She is innovative, proactive, resilient and results oriented with excellent interpersonal and effective communication skills. She was part of the Kisumu Innovation Centre’s Water Hyacinth Utilisation (WHUP) team in 1997-2002, that worked with local communities to turn the water hyacinth into a viable income generator. She set up a business entity to source and access the handcrafted water hyacinth, recycled office paper and recycled tin and wire products to local and export (fairtrade) markets. This provided fisherfolk displaced by the noxious water hyacinth weed with alternative livelihoods. In 2016 she set up a school (White Oaks School) offering alternative education intended at preparing well rounded, balanced, results & solutions oriented graduates ready to utilize their skills to improve their communities.

When her two teens challenged her to help them eradicate the triple planetary threats of climate change, pollution and biodiversity loss in Lake Victoria Basin, Millicent took up the cause and has since provided the requisite guidance, mentorship and referral pathways assisting them to found the Osiepe Sango Rescue Team.
