How we think about and discuss climate change with others is possibly more important than what we do with our individual actions. Research by the Yale Program on Climate Communication shows that Americans are not comfortable talking about and discussing climate change or climate change solutions, in part because it is still such a polarizing issue. Understanding how climate change is an example of a hyperobject and a teleconnection, provides people with greater understanding of the elusive nature of climate change and makes the issue more understandable. In short, understanding these concepts explains how climate change can be both global and local, everywhere and nowhere, all at the same time. It also gives great insight into why climate deniers fail to perceive climate change and why they focus on the arguments they do.
Ted Martinez is a Senior Lecturer in the Northern Arizona University Honors College where he uses literature to teach climate change communication and impacts.
